Sarah Bernhardt
Sarah Bernhardt was a famous French actress who toured American theaters nine times. Bernhardt was known for her beautiful singing voice and for having a bit of a wild reputation. When she visited Seattle as part of her tour in September of 1891, a bear hunt through Green Lake was on her itinerary. Although no bears were caught, Bernhardt and her company had a picnic on the lake. Even though she is best known for her work on the stage, Bernhardt also painted, sculpted, wrote poetry, and was a playwright.
